About the Speaker

Dr Rania Al-Mashat is currently the Minister of International Cooperation, Arab Republic of Egypt. She was Egypt’s First Female Minister of Tourism from Jan 2018 - Dec 2019. The sector under her leadership achieved unprecedented tourism revenues, to record USD 13.03 Billion in 2019, rising 66% from Jan 2018 and exceeding historical outruns. Prior to that, she was Advisor to the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC & Sub Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), and specialized in central banking issues, designing monetary policy frameworks, defining financial stability and macro-prudential tools.

Dr. Al-Mashat has received a number of international and domestic awards; the “2019 Global Champion Award” from the World Travel & Tourism Council; the World Travel Market’s 2019 Global Leaders Award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry”, United Nations World Tourism Organization Destination Marketing Award, the “Leadership in Tourism” award from the International Institute for Peace and Tourism. 

She was selected among the top 50 most influential women in the Egyptian economy during 2015; the 2014 Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum; chosen to join the Scientific Council of Bruegel (the most influential policy think tank in Europe) in 2017; the 2014 and 2015 Economic Leaders for Tomorrow in Africa by Institut Choiseul; among the 2014 top 10 most powerful women in the Egyptian Banking Sector.

She received a PhD and MA in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA.
